    Posted: 09 August 2008 at 3:52pm
Noticed yesterday all of my platys hanging about above the filter just below the surface, and they are usually always near the bottom around and in the log..
Then I noticed one has a very enlarged underside at the front, very swollen, between the erm chin area if you can call it that, to just in front of the ventral fins......

I will try and get a photo, but they are all grouping up and I cant seem to get him.. when i put the net in to try and take him out for a few mins they all dart back down and hide inside the log...

Anyone have any first ideas what it could be form that before I can get round to posting a photo...?

EDIT*
OK have managed to grab a few photos....
Hope this helps anyone identify whats up??

Looks like she's about to drop to me!!Shocked but it's a little difficult from the photo to see the sex properly

and the swimming at the surface is usually a lack of oxygen in the water. Make sure your heater is not up too high and that your filter output is breaking the water surface to oxygenate the water....If need be drop an airstone in and see if that makes a difference

All my water levels are ok and my other inhabitants are happy enough and not bobbing at the surface though...

I have an airstone plugged into the light feed which is on a timer so comes on a few hours a night with the light... has been like that for months and months and they always been ok up til now...
and not altered the heater since install, temp is 24/25c.

i havnt fed them anything different myself, but have noticed one of my real plants has taking a beating.. there are some leaves that are just down to the stalks or part munched on....
could it be a blockage of bits of leaves??

How do I sex a platy? I'll try and work it out myself.

the scales on the belly look very 'pinecone' to me so you could be correct with dropsy or bloat. Do the scales look as though they are sticking out?

Dropsy. Not very infectious but difficult to treat as there can be several causes from old age to kidney problems. Adding tonic salt to the aquarium can help, if the other fish don't mind it.

so took the decision to put him out of his misery... Unhappy

All the others are still happy enough luckily... Smile

EDIT*

Having said that, came home today to find another platy on its back at the bottom...
Did a water check and Nitrite and Nitrate are ok, but have had a definate Amonia surge.. Checked it twice, and got about 0.5-0.75ppm...
So have done an immediate water change of about 30%...
Was that the right thing to do? Hope so???

Is this normal to have a sudden amonia spike for no apparant reason?
My feeding and cleaning intervals have not changed so why would it suddenly pop up like this after months of being zero....?

The water change is the correct thing do yes and these symptoms are likely to be due to the ammonia spikes IMO.  Its not uncommon to get mini cycles when you add new gish but as this has not happened I can only imagine its one of a few scenarois.

  1. your filter is not big enough or effective at dealing with the waste, what size/type is it, and tank size?
  2. you are overfeeding
  3. there is something dead and decaying in the tank
  4. your tapwater has high ammonia levels
Have a look into those
