I love corys!

Those look nice examples too!

Corys definatly like sand. It's much easier on their little whiskers than gravel. What ever tank I setup I always try and put corys in.

I built a whole new set up in a 3 ft tank just for Corys. I had a sandy bottom and some large pebbles for them to swim in and out of.

As for the quality of the pics Julie. Those two pictures were number 103 and 107 the rest are in my waste basket lol.

would it work to try and mix sand with the gravel or would i have to replace it? could i make half the tank sand? also should i have more than 2? i know they are shoaling and have been wondering whether to get more. do they need to be the same species?

If possible I would have just sand. Never tried mixing the two together. I do know that if you try just putting sand in one spot then the corys will move it about and it will end up mixed anyway. I started off with just 2 and they were fine, even breed! That said I think they are much happier in groups. I would have as many as I could have for my tank size. They are small so most tanks will support a few. in a 4ft tank I would try for about 8.

I've attempted mixing substrate but it always ends up one going to the top and the other sinking.

Anything that is food grade. So if you want something cheap, try Empty food containers. Just make sure you clean them first. Ice cream tubs are good. Drinks bottles are sometimes usefull.
