Cry i am losing cherry shrimp, and i don't know what i have done wrong.

about 3 - 4 weeks ago i captured my cherry shrimp (30 approximately) and housed them in their own planted tank. the tank itself is about 2 foot by 1 foot and is running at a steady 24 degrees celcius.

during the set up and over the next weeks i regularly checked the water paramaters...

the results always steady and stable.

unfortunatly...i've just noticed my api masters test kit has expired it's date and i am awaiting a new one off e-bay... so i have no test results that are reliable and up to date...

all has been very well within the set up... until today....

i have lost several shrimp now, and a few look quite unwell...

the only possible cause i can think of is that yesterday i bought a piece of bog wood with java fern attached from my lfs....
that is the only thing i have changed...

could that be the cause??? Confused

if so....how do i put it right??

i've already removed the wood and am quite reluctant to even use it in another tank just incase.... Cry

I'd suggest running carbon as a default first step, and unless a water change has been implicated in the problem doing a decent sized water change now and small daily water changes from now on for a week or so.

There's a few thing that will affect inverts that won't have any significant effect on other inhabitants, the fist thing that springs to mind is copper.  Maybe the bogwood has come from a tank that has been treated with copper for an infection?  If it is copper you can try a polyfilter or cuprasorb to pull it from the water.

Copper leaching from bogwood may well be the problem as Alistair suggests. You haven't had a temperature rise due to warm weather, another possibility?

Thanks Alastair & Jim...

i telephoned the shop...they are adamant that no copper was used in their tanks recently (they are also adamant it's safe to keep fish in a bowl...mentioning no store names of course)....

the temp is still steady, i carried out a huge water change and though they are looking a bit better i'm none the wiser what's happened...

should i bin the offending wood or treat it somehow?

You could keep the wood wet (an empty ice cream container-a good excuse for a pig out) and change the water daily for a while before trying again or adding it to your main tank.
